The summer transfer window activities of some Championship clubs would determine which division they would be playing come 2023-24, and a couple of sides did some underwhelming businesses in the market.
For some, they just could not get their hands on enough cash to fulfill their transfer wishes, others could not get their hands on their desired targets due to the fees involved, and some were not too keen on disrupting their current squad make-up.
Could any of these clubs regret their decisions going forward? See what the nfl predictions have in store for the 2022 NFL season.
Only time will tell, but here are five of the clubs that arguably had the worst summer transfer window in 2022.
Bristol City
Total Spent: £0
Number of Signings: Four
The Robins have started the season on an impressive note, with four wins and two draws to their name, but only four new faces arrived in the summer, with Irish midfielder Mark Sykes, Scottish winger Kal Naismith, English right-back Kane Wilson and French goalkeeper Stefan Bajic all joining for free.
Nigel Pearson’s side finished last season in 17th place, and whether they have done enough this summer to bring Premier League football back to Ashton Gate Stadium remains to be seen.
Finishing in the top-six will be in Bristol City’s plans going forward, and they may have to do better in the January transfer window to boost their promotion chances if they are still very much in contention by then.
Coventry City
Total Spent: Unknown
Number of Signings: Four
The Sky Blues signed English defensive duo Callum Doyle (Manchester City) and Jonathan Panzo (Nottingham Forest) with their Irish counterpart Tayo Adaramola (Crystal Palace) all on loan deals, with Jamaican midfielder Kasey Palmer joining for an undisclosed fee
Mark Robins’ side have picked up just a point in their opening five games of the campaign, and while Bristol are flying despite little activity in the summer, the opposite is happening at Coventry, and they could soon be staring down the barrel of relegation if nothing changes on the pitch.
Will they regret their lack of enough signings or will their little additions finally start impressing?
Luton Town
Total Spent: £1.9million
Number of Signings: Nine
The Hatters got to the semi-finals of the playoffs last season and will try again this term as they continue their search for a first-ever Premier League campaign, but things have not gotten to a perfect start this season, with just two wins out of their opening eight games.
Nathan Jones’ side signed American goalkeeper Ethan Horvath on loan from Nottingham Forest, with English winger Luke Freeman joining on a free.
Luton spent cash on English goalie Matt Macey, English midfielder Alfie Doughty, Canadian attacker Aribim Pepple, Irish midfielder Louie Watson and English striking trio Carlton Morris, John McAtee and Cauley Woodrow, but the squad changes have not reflected on the pitch, and just maybe the club put quantity over quality when getting their summer transfer businesses done.
However, it is too early to say exactly what the problem is, and clarity is assured in the coming months.
West Bromwich Albion
Total Spent: £1.2million
Number of Signings: Six
West Brom ran out of steam last season after a decent start to the campaign but did not particularly do enough in the summer transfer window for a side aiming to return to the big time.
Steve Bruce’s side brought in the quartet of Turkish midfielder Okay Yokuslu, English attacker Jed Wallace, English midfielder John Swift and English right-back Martin Kelly on free deals, while spending on the acquisitions of Irish midfielder Jayson Molumby and English forward Brandon Thomas-Asante.
The Baggies have managed just a win in seven Championship games, and failure to secure Premier League promotion at the end of the season could see them rue not investing well this summer.
Wigan Athletic
Total Spent: Unknown
Number of Signings: Five
Leam Richardson’s side returned to the Championship in the summer after relegation in 2019-20, and they have started the season with two wins and four draws in seven league games.
Wigan signed the trio of Welsh attacker Nathan Broadhead (Everton), English striker Ashley Fletcher (Watford) and English centre-back Rarmani Edmonds-Green (Huddersfield Town) on loan, with Namibian defender Ryan Nyambe joining for free.
Irish midfielder Anthony Scully joined for an undisclosed fee, and whether they have done enough to keep themselves up or challenge for the top-six remains to be seen.
