After the Los Angeles Lakers’ subpar performance from beyond the arc against the New Orleans Pelicans, Gilbert Arenas didn’t hold back in mocking their role players. Following the Lakers’ 129-109 defeat in their last game of 2023, where they struggled with a 10-for-31 shooting record from three-point range, Arenas took to social media.
Arenas, a longtime supporter of LeBron James, humorously offered to attend an open tryout for the Lakers and rent his shooting prowess to assist the struggling franchise. In a video post, he playfully mentioned, “@kingjames When is Open Tryouts? I got ya KING. Tell #Prince #Cam #Van I’ll Rent them my Arm for the season. It’s a SUPER MAX ARM.”
Arenas specifically called out Taurean Prince, Cam Reddish, and Jarred Vanderbilt, the Lakers’ role players sharing significant minutes with LeBron James and Anthony Davis in the starting lineup. Criticizing their three-point shooting performance, Arenas highlighted the need for better perimeter support for the Lakers’ star duo.
While Prince has a respectable season average of 40.1% from beyond the arc, criticism arises when it comes to crucial moments. Reddish, with a struggling 29.7% three-point shooting, has faced scrutiny for unnecessary attempts. Vanderbilt, not known for his shooting, holds a 1-for-14 record from the three-point line this season.
With a win-loss record of 17-17 heading into 2024, coach Darvin Ham faces the challenge of optimizing the rotation to make the most of LeBron James and Anthony Davis’ playing time.
Arenas, known for his bold and humorous takes, previously tried out for the Lakers before the 2011-12 season. Although he showcased his shooting skills during the tryout, he ultimately opted not to pursue the opportunity due to concerns about media scrutiny and playing alongside Kobe Bryant.
