Opinion: The 10 forwards set to challenge for the Championship Golden Boot this season

Fulham hitman Aleksandar Mitrovic bagged 43 goals in 44 Championship games last season, 14 goals clear of his closest challenger – Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke – in the race for the Golden Boot, and while his record will be tough to break anytime soon, a lot of strikers and forwards across the 24 teams in the division will be aiming to this term, or at least come out on top in the race.

The 2022-23 campaign is already in full swing, with eight games gone, and here are the 10 strikers to watch in the race for the Golden Boot this season. Elsewhere, the NFL new season resumes tomorrow night, that means fans can fire up their nfl week 17 odds betting model to see where the value lies each week in the betting market.

Andreas Weimann

The Bristol City forward currently has three goals and four assists in eight games so far this term, continuing from where he stopped last term when he bagged 22 goals and 10 assists in 46 games.

The Ashton Gate Stadium outfit are currently fourth in the table and will be hoping the Austrian can help them earn promotion after they finished last term in 17th place.

Ben Brereton

The Chilean international striker ended 2021-22 with 22 goals in 37 appearances and has continued his fine form, with four goals in eight games so far.

Blackburn ended last season in eighth place and are currently in seventh position, and Brereton’s form could be key to pushing them into the top-six if his form continues.

Jay Rodriguez

Burnley are eyeing an immediate return to the Premier League under manager Vincent Kompany, and Rodriguez is part of the attack tasked with getting that done.

The 33-year-old has four goals in six games so far, and will hope to get around 16 more after bagging 22 goals in 47 games for West Brom back in 2018-19.

Joel Piroe

The Dutch forward has three goals in eight games for Swansea City after ending last term with 22 goals in 45 games, and the Welsh outfit will be hoping for a similar return from him this term in order to boost their promotion chances after four full seasons out of the Premier League.

Josh Brownhill

The 26-year-old is impressing in front of goal at Turf Moor thus far, with four goals to his name in eight games.

The former Bristol City striker is already two goals away from surpassing his best return in a season, and would be eyeing the Golden Boot and instant promotion with the Clarets.

Josh Sargent

Norwich City have started life back in the Championship on a solid note, and their American forward is one of those responsible, with five goals in seven games under his belt so far.

The 22-year-old is starting to fulfil his potential and could give others on the goalscoring charts a run for their money.

Karlan Grant

The West Brom striker ended last season with 18 goals and has bagged three goals thus far in the new campaign.

The Baggies will be aiming for promotion after last season’s disappointment, and Grant can play an integral role to make that come true.

Oscar Estupinan

The Colombian is leading the way in the race for the Golden Boot with seven goals in eight games for Hull City after arriving from Vitoria de Guimaraes this summer.

Estupinan, 25, scored 15 goals in 28 games in the Portuguese top-flight last term and is keen on proving himself in England.

He has started to and the Tigers will really hope that translates into promotion.

Ross Stewart

The Scottish attacker bagged 26 goals in 49 games for Sunderland in League One last term and has hit the ground running in the Championship after helping them seal promotion.

Stewart has five goals in seven games so far this season and could help the Black Cats finish in the top-six as they eye a second consecutive promotion if he manages to keep up his form.

Teemu Pukki

The Finland international has scored just once in seven games for the Canaries so far, but he should not be ruled out of the race for the Golden Boot given his huge experience and quality.

Pukki scored 55 goals over his first two seasons in the Championship with Norwich, emerging as the league’s highest marksman in 2018-19, and nobody should bet against him finding his goalscoring form going forward this term.
