Sony has acknowledged that the PlayStation 5 is now entering the “latter stage of its life cycle” after falling short of sales expectations. Initially targeting 25 million units sold by the end of the financial year on March 31, 2025, Sony has revised the forecast down to 21 million.

Despite selling 8.2 million PS5 units in the third quarter of 2023, up from the previous year, it was insufficient to meet the ambitious sales goal. The company anticipates a decline in the sales pace of the PS5 hardware from the next fiscal year, emphasizing a balance between profitability and sales.

Launched in November 2020 during the pandemic, the PS5 has sold 54.7 million units in just over three years. With Sony signaling the latter stage of its life cycle, speculation arises about the next-generation console, possibly the PS6. Hideo Kojima’s upcoming game, Physint, is speculated to be a potential PS6 launch title, with development expected to begin after Death Stranding 2, aiming for a 2025 release.

Considering Sony’s comments, Physint might not be released before April 2025, suggesting a potential launch for the PS6 in November 2027, following the historical pattern of seven-year gaps between PlayStation console releases.

Sony has also indicated that major existing PlayStation franchise games, ruling out sequels in popular series like God of War and Spider-Man, will not be released before April 2025. This announcement sets expectations for a significant gap before the arrival of major titles from these franchises.
